Pheonix had sore, dry and irritated skin over his neck and under his body, respiratory problems and thrush (a bacterial infection) in his feet. He was painfully thin, scared and confused. Fortunately, with the help of someone we know we bought him out of his sad situation.
However bad he looked, it seemed like he hasn’t always been in that condition. He had recent shoes, a shiny coat, good legs and back. We suspect that he was ridden and not cared for properly. His injuries and problems were left ignored. As a result, he probably no longer won races or performed as expected. Which turned him into an “unwanted hobby”.
We treated his wounds, skin conditions and thrush successfully. Unfortunately, Pheonix struggled to gain weight due to his bad teeth. We manage his diet very carefully, feeding him hay cobs that are soft and more easy to eat. He is on a special cough syrup, which helps with his respiratory problems, and he gets food supplements. We also wet his hay and straw for him to get rid of the dust. He is currently doing well, but we carefully manage his environment and his food to not aggravate his issues.
With his exercise he is definitely making progress, he goes on walks with our volunteers and he likes to run. Pheonix is a very willing and intelligent horse, though a little bit of an introvert. He enjoys his time alone, not always interacting with the other horses in his mini herd. He loves to roll and relax in the sun in his paddock, a calm little gentleman who doesn’t cause any problems. He just wants to be loved. Luckily, there are two volunteers that give him special care and all the attention that he needs.
Donations made towards Pheonix help him with his special diet, supplements and vet bills, keeping his respiratory problems under control.
