However Monty had a sad problem. He had heartworm (filaria) which is an awful problem that can kill dogs. It's incredibly common here but the saddest thing is that it is very easy to prevent. A yearly injection or with monthly pills/ spot on treatment will keep them safe. However, so many dogs come to us with the problem.
Is this because of lack of knowledge, ignorance or people don't care? We don't know…
If left untreated it is fatal. However fortunately for the dogs that get into rescue homes it is also treatable. But with a very expensive and long treatment. For this Monty wasn't chosen. It's scary for people to open their hearts to a dog with a fatal and expensive problem.
However for Monty things were ok. He was happy here, he has made loads of doggy friends and loved being part of our pack.
