It has been a very full on month for our boy Devante! He is very content in his field alongside his new best friend Nala! These two will never be found far from each other, they are constantly glued to each other’s side its such a sight to see!
We had a scare at the beginning of the month, one morning Devante was struggling to open his eye which at first glance was swollen. Straight away we got the vets involved, gave him a painkiller, and waited to inspect further. The neon green liquid showed we were not dealing with an ulcer, we started the appropriate treatment immediately consisting of 2 separate eye drops 3 times a day. Over the next three weeks we saw a massive improvement and could slowly decrease the medication after each weekly vets visit. He was a true gentleman and although he did not love the eye drops (who does!) with patience and time he allowed us to help heal his eye. Now his eye is completely back to normal, a great relief for us all as it is the only working eye he has!
We also noticed he had started to make hayballs and was due a teeth check, luckily the vet was coming to do multiple horses anyway so we added him onto the list! It was my first time with a hand inside a horses mouth, an experience I will never forget. I felt his 3 top teeth that are left, and how worn down they are now, they practically don’t exist! We also found a loose tooth, it was just starting to loosen so we caught it quickly and thankfully they managed a clean extraction. After this visit we had to flush his mouth after each feeding to make sure no food was collecting in the hole while it could heal, again with this he was a gentleman and the treatment went smoothly! We also changed his feeding plan to suit his capabilities adding more hard feed to his diet as this is easier to eat for him- he doesn’t have the teeth to break up the hay and this is why it comes out in balls! This is quite a common issue with the older horses we have had here at the sanctuary.
He is a fan favourite with all the volunteers and a teacher for those who have never worked with horses before! Daily he enjoys walks down through the town to the sea and also enjoys a good hour at the grazing spot trying his best with those teeth to chew through the long grass we have around from time to time!
Feburary was a big month for all our equines including a de-worming for each of them which we do regularly with our vets! We have also dealt with a new arrival and some re-homings! So I would just like to take a chance to thank you personally for your on-going support of not only Devante but the project and the work we do as a whole!
