Valentina has been with us for a little over a month now! We have used this time to slowly get to know this kind, yet sensitive, girl.
We have had the vets out to give her a check over, upon first inspection we were worried she may have melanoma in her thorax/neck similar to another rescue we had previously, Catalina! Fortunately, the vets believe upon first examination it is simply overdeveloped muscles in her neck, most likely from using her muscles incorrectly during riding! We found evidence of a small old tendon injury and melanoma around her tail, other than this she seems rather healthy. She does however suffer from an allergy to, what we believe to be, mosquito bites. The condition is very normal for horses in the area she came from so we will give her some time and see how the condition develops. She doesn’t seem all too bothered by this, most likely she has suffered from this for a very long time but we will do what we can to combat the allergy. She rather likes a scratch in the affected areas, her nose wiggles from side to side and when you stop she bends her neck around asking you to continue, she really is a very sweet horse!
We called the vet out for a second time to check her as she seemed rather sensitive on her feet. We were sure we knew the cause however wanted professional back up! Her hooves are quite short making her foot sensitive, this on top of the common sensitivity transitioning to barefoot means we give her removable boots for her walks to make her more comfortable. In the field she is comfortable without them which is great news! Now she is happily out walking daily on the rocky terrain, with these boots all the sensitivity is gone!
We also have a trigger points masseuse who is kind enough to give her time once a week to the horses and also donkeys, she has had 2 sessions with Valentina and confirmed Valentina has deer neck, a term for ill-formed muscling in the neck. Valentina really seemed to enjoy these sessions, it released a lot of tension for her and she was happy to stand to receive her massage.
We are still getting to know her, slowly but surely, we have the idea she may have been kept alone for sometime as she is very nervous to be without the other horses and must always have a “buddy” around her! She is really enjoying walks out with the herd, she has walked through the town this week and was very good around the trucks and cars, even when a helicopter went past she was great! The only thing she doesn’t seem sure of is sheep, however with many of them here at the finca, and in the finca’s around where we walk, we are sure she will soon learn they are not so scary!!!
Feburary was a big month for all our equines including a de-worming for each of them which we do regularly with our vets! Valentina was absolutely amazing with this, even if she didn’t really like the taste! We have also dealt with eye issues, teeth filing/removal, a new arrival and some re-homings! So I would just like to take a chance to thank you personally for your on-going support of not only Valentina but the project and the work we do as a whole!
