Dear Sponsors,
I hope this email finds you well. It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of Nala, who we sadly had to say goodbye to last month.
As you know, Nala had always faced challenges since her arrival with us, including severe lordosis and what we suspect was an old pelvic fracture. She often needed extra time to get around or stand up, but we never rushed her. Nala always managed in her own way, and we gave her the space and support she needed to be comfortable. A dedicated volunteer even took her on additional walks to help keep her active and healthy.
However, recently Nala’s health began to deteriorate. Initially, she appeared fine, but if she lay down on her “bad side,” she could remain there for hours, which is particularly risky for horses. We worked closely with our vets, exploring various supplements and medications in an effort to alleviate her pain.
With the amazing help of our volunteer team, we were able to support her physically when she needed assistance standing. Unfortunately, over time, Nala became less able to help herself. Her once-strong spirit started to fade, and her quality of life began to decline. Her movements became more laboured, and despite our best efforts, her condition worsened. Sores developed from extended periods of lying down, and she exhibited additional troubling symptoms that prompted further veterinary consultations.
At one point, we even explored the possibility that she might be pregnant due to certain signs, but after thorough examinations, it became clear that this wasn’t the case. As her need for medical intervention increased, it became evident that there was little more we could do to restore her comfort and independence.
After careful consideration with our veterinary team, and seeing how much her freedom and vitality had diminished, we made the difficult decision to let her go peacefully, surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.
Thank you for your generous support of Nala throughout her time with us. While her journey was not always easy, she lived it with resilience, and we are grateful to have been able to give her the love and care she deserved until the end.
Warm regards,
Gaia
